Changlongli Signboard Beautification and
Renewal Project
SIGNBOARD UPDATES
Taiwan is beautiful and full of stories. Unfortunately, the streetscape has not evolved with the changing times. As new buildings continue to rise while old houses remain, what we see is the contrast, rather than the image of urban development.
ABOUT PROJECT
The goal of the "Urban Project" is to improve the actual living environment of residents. We focus on urban landscape transformation to enhance the city's overall aesthetics. "Signboards shape the city's image and become part of the streetscape." This project uses Changlongli as a demonstration district, encouraging businesses to replace old signboards with new ones. The design incorporates each store's unique features, promotes the aesthetics of reduced signage, and aims to create harmony between the street's character and the building facade, hoping to showcase a streetscape style unique to "Changlongli."

ANALYSIS
After visiting the area and discussing with store owners, we have identified four major issues:
The old-style signboard panels and iron frames occupy a large area and have rusted over time, creating a cluttered visual appearance.
Store owners also mentioned that the old-fashioned light bulbs are high-wattage, leading to both high energy consumption and costs. Some sign lights have already failed but have not been repaired.
The original installation of the signs was inconsistent in terms of position and size, contributing to the unsightly overall appearance of the city.
Finally, due to prolonged disrepair and exposure to natural disasters and man-made incidents, many signs are now in danger of collapsing, posing potential public safety risks.
Therefore, we propose solutions for these four issues:
Old iron frames
are too long
and rusted
Shorten steel frames and use galvanized steel pipes
Size and
position of
signboards are
inconsistent
"Modify sizes and arrange them at similar" heights
Disrepair
and risks
from natural
disasters
Update signs and strengthen their fixation
Old-style light
bulbs consume
too much power
Use LED lights to reduce unnecessary energy consumption
PROCESS
In the past, signboard renovations followed a uniform size and specification without discussing styles or designs with each store. At first, the store owners were skeptical when we approached them. However, through continuous communication, we gradually gained their trust. Since each store had different requirements, it was a significant design challenge for us to create a cohesive look across the various styles of signboards. During the construction process, most signboards needed to be completely dismantled and reinstalled. In some cases, certain parts were retained and renovated. To avoid inconveniencing the store owners, we conducted "multiple site inspections in advance to confirm every detail and worked closely with manufacturers to discuss the most suitable approach.
